Welcome to Maastricht!

The beautiful view from the banks of the canals that run throughout the town of Maastricht!

Maastricht is a beautiful little town in the southern most part of The Netherlands. It is a town full of classical architecture and cobblestone streets that have left me in awe in all of its beauty. Coming from a busy place like California Maastricht is like a whole new world for me in so many different aspects. As part of my study abroad program we were able to explore Maastricht as a group. We got to learn more in-depth about the history of the town, the people, the culture, and its place in The Netherlands and the hearts of the Dutch who call this place home.

Sint Janskerk Red Tower in Maastricht, Netherlands

My first week of being introduced and getting situated to the little town of Maastricht has been quite an adventure. I honestly did not know what to expect before coming out here, but after exploring the winding cobblestone streets of Maastricht and meeting the townspeople it feels as if I have traveled back in time! Back in the states I feel like our society encourages life on a fast track always rushing through something or rushing to get to somewhere. Life in Maastricht is definitely a whole lot slower and has encouraged me to slow down, re-center myself and start really embracing and cherishing all the little things in life again. Since arriving my experiences so far have left me feeling so immersed in the culture and history of Maastricht.

Traveling Back in Time Through the Caves of Maastricht

During my first week we had the opportunity to travel to the Maastricht Caves of Zonneberg. There was SO MUCH history preserved in these caves reaching as far back as the second world war! Over the years these caves have been used for many different purposes. Some used the caves as refuge during wars times, some used the caves as a way of imprinting their history on the walls, and some even used the caves to advertise products people could purchase in the nearby markets. It was definitely a sight worth exploring and learning about, though we only toured a small portion of the caves. The caves spanned over 200 miles and are rich with the art of Maastricht history.

Friendly Neighborhood Sheep

Maastricht is widely-known as a biking town so it was only right that I purchased a bike to use for school and exploring while living out here for the next few months. While riding down the path next to the river one day I came across a flock of sheep just hanging out eating and enjoying the beautiful weather. These sheep were not like the ones back home they were not scared of me but in fact approached me to say hallo! After spending some time hanging out enjoying each others company it was time to say baaaaaaaaaye! It was definitely a pleasant surprise!

It is still just the beginning of my experience here in Maastricht and I am very excited to see where these cobblestone streets will take me. I am excited to expand my knowledge both academically and personally. I can feel myself growing so much already and with each day that passes with each new experience I am evolving into a better higher vibrating version of myself.

Stay tuned for more adventures! Until then blessings!
